Atua
This is a list of gods, or atua, of Samoa. This is by its very nature incomplete, as each tribe had their own local deities which have been lost to time.
A
'Ae: a Tongan who accompanied Tinilau on his journeys on the back of two turtles. When Tinilau learned that 'Ae had killed his pets, he called upon the gods
to transport the sleeping 'Ae to his home. Once there, 'Ae was slain, cooked, and eaten in revenge for his deed.
Aitu-i-Pava: war god from Fa'asaleleanga.
Aitu Langi: name for gods who fell from the heavens and became village gods. Represented by a sea shell; incarnate as the owl.
Alele: legendary people east of the islands who flew with wings on their back and plundered nearby tribes.
Alii-o-fiti: benevolent household god; incarnate as the eel.
Alii Tu: incarnate as the ve'a (rail bird), good fortune when seen in battle.
'Alo'alo: son of Tagaloa and wife of Sina.
Aloimasina: inferior household god associated with the moon who cures illness.
Apa'ula: set out to revenge the murder of her son Tui-osavalalo by her brothers. She found his body, and his head told her to gain the stretching services of his brother, Va'atausili.
She and Va'atausili set out for Fiji, and killed the murders.
Apelesa: inferior household god who cures illness.
Asomua: inferior household god who detects and names thieves.
Atiogie or Leatiogie: ancient Samoan chief, direct descendant of Pili, whose sons freed Samoa from Tonga and created the Malietoa title.
Aumā: inferior household god; incarnate as the wild pigeon.
Ave-i-le-tala: god of childbirth who supposedly predicted the arrival of the Christian god and displacement of the atua.
E
Elo: ruler of the underworld, Puloto.
I
I'aulualo: ancient Samoan who, along with his two sons, was swallowed by a great fish which had threatened the passage into the bay at Safata,'Upolu, Samoa. Once inside the
fish, I'aulualo and his sons hacked away at its sides with bamboo knives until the fish in anger broke through the reef and landed on shore. The thrashing of the huge fish created the ideal harbor at Safata.
Ita-ngata: god or spirit who can enter his earthly priests and bring calamity upon his enemies.
Iulautalo: inferior household god to which all tips of leaves were sacred.
F
Faamalu: war god; incarnate as a fish or cloud. Prayers are addressed to him to avenge thievery.
Faaola: war god who bestows bravery on worshippers.
Fa'ifa'imalie: first to cultivate the yam, from which the Tongan goddess Fehuluni stole.
Fanonga: war god; incarnate as the owl. Samoans offered food sacrifices to him.
Fatupuaa-ma-le-fee: inferior household god.
Fe'e: war god; incarnate as the octopus or cuddlefish. Brought to the island of Manu'a by the god Tagaloa who found him floating on a piece of coral. He became the father of the gods,
Sinasa'umani and Sasa'umani, and ruled Pulotu for a while. When he departed, his son Saveasi'uleo became ruler.
Fitiaumua: ancient Samoan who conquered the entire chain of islands and became the first king of Samoa.
Foge: rain god from the island of Savai'i. He and Toafa are parents of the rain goddess Saato. Both are incarnate as two oblong, smooth stones.
Fo'isia: ancient chief who waged war against Tui'olosega. When he saw that the village might be defeated, he relinquished his title, and jumped into the sea
where he was changed into a tall black rock located on the southwest corner of 'Ofu.
Fuailagi: war god; incarnate as the sea eel. Creator of the Heavens who dug up the earth and created a new island, but a debate between him and chief Niuleamoa caused them to go
from one place to another to place it. They finally wound up anchoring the island between 'Ofu and Ta'u.
G
Ga'e: war god; incarnate in the plaited coconut basket.
Gai'o: gave life to a rock from the depths of the turbulent sea that became wife to the creator god Tagaloa and mother to the messenger Tuli.
Galumalemana: ancient chief responsible for the introduction of the custom of giving fine mats to the chief's servants upon his death.
Gegē: god who lived at Falealili, island of 'Upolu. He once killed the demons from the island of Savai'i by changing them into stone.
Haelefeke: god who unsuccessfully attempted to steal some of the Tongan islands.
Hanitemau: goddess of Rotuma, patron of trees and vegetation.
Hina or Sina: daughter of the great creator god Tagaloa. As Tagaloa created the Samoan Islands, he sent Sina in the form of the bird Turi
(Tuli) to find dry land. Again and again she returned until finally she saw dry land appearing from among the crashing waves. Sina was sent down once again with creeping vines that eventually turned into
mortal beings.

Tafa'i: him, his brother 'Alise, and sister Ifiifi are children of Pua and Sigano. Married Sina from heaven, and bore La, the sun, who went to live with his mother in the skies.
Kaikaiponi: ancient, brave warrior of Rotuma, but originally he was from Tonga. He married a girl from Rotuma and because of his bravery was appointed chief.
Tagaloa: born in human form from "cloudless-heaven" and the "spread-out-heaven" in the seventh generation of creation. He created the heavens and the
earth, Lalolagi. He threw stones from heaven that became the numerous Samoan islands.
Tigilau: handsome chief of Tonga and wife of Sina.
Tū: superior war god, who resides in the heavens and whose sacred colour is red; incarnate as the rail bird.
